Our Story

How We Got Started

This program developed simply out of the love of dance and desire to bring an accessible dance program to military and DOD families on the island of Okinawa. â€‹

The mission at Okinawa Schoo of Performing Arts is to provide students of all levels with more than just dance classes, but a unique experience in which the student is inspired to have a love and passion for dance.

Class Descriptions

Primary Ballet/Acro dance

Primary dance is for young dancers age 3-5. In this class we will begin to learn the positions of the body, basic dance terminology, and control as we start to move the body in more an athletic form of movement.

Ballet Level 1

This class is for dancers at least 6 years old with less than two years of ballet experience. We will focus on proper body placement, dance terminology, and giving the students a firm ballet foundation.

Ballet Level 2

This class is for dancers with 2 to 3 years of dance experience. Students in this class understand appropriate ballet body placement, basic ballet terminology, and are able to memorize 3 minute ballet routines.

Ballet 3

This is a class for dancers with 3-4 years of dance experience. Students know appropriate ballet body placement, positions of the body and a working knowledge of basic ballet terminology.

Ballet 4, Pre-Pointe

​

Students in ballet 4 and/or Pre-Pointe have more than 4 years of dance experience. Students know appropriate ballet body placement, positions of the body and have a working knowledge of basic and advanced ballet terminology. Students in this class are able to complete ballet movements with little instructor demonstration.

Ballet 5, 6, Pointe 

​

Students in Ballet 5, 6 or Pointe classes must have 5 years of ballet experience, appropriate body placement, extensive knowledge of ballet terminology, and have been en pointe for more than a year. These classes are by assessment only and require instructor approval. Student en pointe must take at least three ballet classes a week.

Jazz, Lyrical, Contemporary, and Acro

Our jazz classes immerse dancers in contemporary and historical styles of jazz, from Broadway to Theatrical techniques. Jazz elements help build dynamic and powerful dancers through parallel work, arm and hand positions, isolations of the head, shoulders and hips, varied timing, shape, and movements. In addition to exploring variations of leaps and turns. 
Level 1 to Advanced. 
Students in Company must take jazz.

Lyrical

Lyrical dance uses ballet, jazz and modern dance technique as a basis for movement. Students in Lyrical must take either ballet or jazz. Lyrical 1 is an introduction to students using movements to interpret a song or emotion, students work on technique and choreography. Lyrical 2 students are expected to have a working knowledge of dance termniology and have proper body placement while dancing.

Contemporary

Contemporary is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary  employs strong standing and floor techniques. 
Contemporary is by teacher placement only, students must take ballet and in level 4-6 in order to take contemporary.

Acro

Acro dance combines classical dance technique with precision acrobatic and athletic elements.
Placement by an instructor is required as well as at least one ballet or jazz class. Levels offered are beginner, intermediate, advanced.

 Audition only placement

Company members will be afforded the opportunity to compete in local and international competitions. Attend dance conventions, intensives, and have guest instructors. 

Company members must take ballet and at least 2 other dance forms.

Members must be able to commit to daily physical conditioning and stretching at home. 

Company members will commit to preforming in an annual spring show and any showcases.

Program Information

Tuition

1 hour a week  $48.00 a month

​

1.5 hours a week  $65.00/month

​

2 hours a week $83.00 a month

3 hours a week $115.00 a month 

​

4 hours a week $155.00 a month

​

5 hours a week $175.00 a month

​

6 hours a week $220 a month 

​

Class times that fall between hours will be rounded up to the next amount. For example 3.5 hours of class a week will be $155 a month. 

​

Tuition is due on the dancers first class day.

Dress Code

Primary Ballet/Acro Girls: pink leotard, pink or flesh colored tights, pink or flesh colored ballet shoes.

Primary Ballet/Acro Boys: athletic style clothing, black ballet shoes.

​

Ballet 1-4 Girls: Black leotard, pink or flesh colored tights, pink or flesh colored canvas split sole ballet shoes. 

Ballet 5-6 Girls: Solid color leotard, pink or flesh colored tights, pink or flesh colored capezio hanami stretch canvas ballet shoes or similar. 

Ballet 1-4 Boys: White shirt, black boys dance tights or black athletic shorts, black canvas split sole ballet shoes.

Jazz Girls: Tight fitting athletic top, crop top, leotard, solid color biketard or unitard, Black dance shorts or leggings, tan or black slip on jazz shoes for jazz.

Jazz Boys: Athletic style clothing (no undergarments showing), tan or black jazz shoes for jazz. 

​

Lyrical/Contemporary/Acro Girls/Hip Hop: Solid color leotard, tight fitting athletic shirt, biketard or unitard, black dance shorts or leggings, tan jazz shoes or flesh colored dance paws. Contemporary footwear is black socks. No street shoes are allowed in Hip Hop, if dance sneakers are worn, they must only be worn in the studio and have very little traction.

Lyrical Boys: Athletic style clothing (no undergarments showing), tan jazz shoes.

All Ballet students hair needs to be worn in a bun, or if the hair is too short to go into a bun up and out of the dancers face. 

All other students must have their hair up, out of their face and off their shoulders  in either a ponytail, french braid or bun.  

Program Rules

Parents please remain present on site for all dancers. You must remain in the hallway waiting area for the duration of your childs class. The dancers must be in dress code, if they are not they will not be allowed to participate in class that day. All payment is made to MCCS, payment must be made by the first week of the month or your dancer will be removed from class for the remainder of the month.
